I sent a detailed reply yesterday but because it has screen shots it's
been help up waiting for Benny to approve it. The screen shots show how
I set up the smart mailboxes and the rules.

I'd suggest using "Date Received" rather than "Date" as it's more
accurate (not dependent on a source generating header fields correctly).

I'd suggest making the action "Set Tag/Keyword" rather than "Delete
Permanently" as a way to test it. Set a new tag so that you can see
which messages it will act on.

In my detailed reply with screen shots yesterday, I omitted a step
that's important, my apologies. When you double-click the name of a
smart mailbox, it opens the pane where you set the real mailboxes that
the smart mailbox applies to. In the upper right corner, there are four
icons. The second of these is "Conditions for messages displayed." Click
that and add the rule [Date-received] [is not within last] [<desired
time period>]. Then proceed with right-clicking the name of the smart
mailbox and selecting "Edit Rules" and set a rule with the same
condition and the "Delete Permanently" action (or the "Set Tag/Keyword"
action as a test).
