OK +1 from me. Is there a feature request somewhere?

The reason I prefer address book groups (over the approach below) is 
that the groups are pretty clear and it's easy to change over time (e.g. 
people come and go from my lab)

More or less what I'm doing, using an existing static mailbox. But first 
I have to clear out the mailbox for odd messages that got filed there in 
error (takes longer than one might think). So yes your approach of 
tagging defined messages would probably work better.
