Groovy, this appears to have resolved my issue with it requesting access to contacts: the Composer was indeed set to use Contacts as an Auto-Completion source.

I'm not sure I understand about the behavior you're missing. A single click has never opened a separate message window in my experience. If you use a viewer window layout with a message view pane, a single click in the message list will show the message in that pane. In my setup at least, when a message is selected in the list, pressing the Return key will open the message in a new window. So will double-clicking the message in the list.

And I think looking more closely at the preferences solved this one too. It was set so that Double click "searches for related messages" (requiring shift-double-click to open in a new window). Changing that to "opens a message in a new window" restored the behavior I had come to expect. Maybe the behavior that had confused me is the default behavior? I'm pretty sure I didn't change those prefs when I reinstalled MailMate on my new system. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But thanks again for reply. Although the issue was ultimately PEBKAC, I think it nudged me in the right direction.
