[MlMt] Gmail message not moving to trash or changing read status

Thanks, Henry. That’s an interesting system. FWIW, this is how I do 
it, in case anyone else finds it useful:

+ I have a small set of genuine imap mailboxes called, e.g., 
“Marketing”, “Social”, “Financial”, etc.
+ I have the same small set of rules attached to my inbox, one 
corresponding to each of the genuine imap mailboxes above, that 
implement the following logic: If the From address (sometimes Subject, 
etc.) of the incoming message matches any From address (or Subject, 
etc.) in the corresponding genuine imap mailbox, tag the message with a 
corresponding tag: “Marketing”, “Social”, etc; and then move it 
to either Deleted or Archive, depending on the tag (Marketing goes to 
Deleted, Financial goes to Archive, for example).
+ I have a set of smart-mailboxes that pick up on the relevant tags, so 
I can see the same kind of messages (e.g., marketing messages) clustered 
over several accounts, etc.
+ Basically, there is a tripartite structure: for every category, I have 
a genuine imap mailbox, an inbox rule, and a smart mailbox.
    + This allows the following: the first time I get some marketing 
message from, say, sales at wewantyourmoney.com, I manually move the 
message into the genuine imap mailbox “Marketing.” The next time I 
get an email from the same address, the address is matched with the 
content of the “Marketing” mailbox, and the “Marketing” tag is 
automatically applied, and the message is moved Deleted. (If one has 
only have a single email account, one can skip the smart mailbox part of 
the setup, but it is designed to deal with multiple accounts)
     + There is a little overhead in implementing this system for the 
first time, but within a few weeks pretty much all messages are sorted 
appropriately.
    + I use the same logic for other things like students in a 
particular course, committee members in some particular committee, etc., 
but often without defining the relevant tags and just moving the message 
appropriately.
+ Messages older than X months in Deleted are purged, etc.
+ I also use SpamSieve, but this system is for stuff that’s not Junk, 
but might just be nuisance (and for stuff that’s neither).
