Bold text for unread messages is an option in the Viewer settings pane of MailMate.

Yes, most users should never do that. The workaround described in the release notes is about bringing back a feature which used to work with the old message list coloring feature. A few users have written to me that they used both coloring and bold/italic and they lost the latter ability in the test releases of MailMate.
