I do not recommend using Yahoo mail for any mail service. I have had several Yahoo accounts for years. Last year I noticed that several thousand messages were suddenly gone. I emailed Yahoo support and their response was basically “What messages?”. They said that they have no record of any messages being deleted and stopped responding to my further communications.

I’m considering my options and will choose a responsible service this year.

Further to your question, here is a list of mail archiver services and applications. It comes from Randy Singer, author of some of The Macintosh Bible editions.

You can store tens of thousands of e-mail messages within Mail without a noticeable hit on performance, but it’s not ideal. Folks who have many tens of thousands of old e-mail messages who want to save their old e-mails, and also have mail running as fast as possible, will archive their e-mail messages outside of Mail, usually with the assistance of an e-mail archiving program:

The best e-mail archiving programs will set up a database so that you can search through you old e-mail messages instantly.

With an IMAP account, this isn’t your only option. You can opt to download stuff from your IMAP server, archive it on your Mac, and delete it from your IMAP server. That only makes sense to me if you are running out of space on your mail provider’s server and you are being charged for it.

May I recommend this e-book?
