It’s a bit unusual, but you have to click the various radio buttons at 
the left of the Counters preference pane to select which of the up to 
four possible counters you want to edit. In other words, those radio 
buttons are not saying where you want the counter to be (as some might 
expect), but they’re saying which counter is ‘selected’ for 
editing.
