My suggestion is to add a rule to that smart mailbox that moves all
mailing list e-mails to a "Mailinglist" folder. Then they will not show
in INBOX anymore.

I do this for the logs and notices I get from various services and
servers I run.

Everything else I file away in "Archive" after I have
read/replied/flagged/deleted them, leaving the INBOX empty most of the
time.

Are you using SpamSieve <http://c-command.com/spamsieve/>? If not I
highly recommend it and MailMate has built in integration with it.

I rarely see any spam in my INBOX thanks to SpamSieve.
