It's actually a very old issue shortly discussed in [this 
ticket](https://freron.lighthouseapp.com/projects/58672-mailmate/tickets/531). 
I haven't looked into it again since then :|

I just realized that to avoid the main problem I can easily reject dates 
in the past such that it'll stay “red” if you write “yesterday” 
or if “9am” is interpreted to be in the past. I've added this.
