One of the few cases where an Apple Mail architectural choice was
uncommonly wise is loose binding between discrete SMTP/submission
servers and POP/IMAP accounts. Outbound mail servers are properly
independent of IMAP accounts, rather than appendages of them. That
principle may be a useful starting point for thought.
