I'm still not sure I understand—I've never received a message I couldn't read, although I've never installed GPGTools. What OpenPGP message is not being created without the tools? What does it mean that I can't "create a message" when all I'm doing is reading?

Hi John,
If you take a look at most my emails, they are digitally signed by OpenPGP, so you can be sure that it's *ME* sending the emails. Most are also not encrypted which is why you can read them. If I were to encrypt an email, then you wouldn't be able to read it (given you don't have a key to decrypt the email).
It's really easy to setup and does add that little extra peace of mind when needed ;)
Cheers,
