Update 2: The workaround for this issue is to take “[Gmail]/Drafts” 
offline. This has the effect that the message is not uploaded to Gmail 
until *after* it has been sent. Otherwise, it apparently triggers a bug 
in the SMTP server of Google Apps. Sigh…
