That is certainly not expected behavior. Something like this should only 
happen when “Organize by Thread” is enabled and the currently 
selected message is collapsed.

I've tried to reproduce this issue, but I did not succeed. Let me know 
if you see some kind of pattern.

Which layout are you using (“View ▸ Layout”)?
