The server of his provider has a bad SSL configuration on port 993 with 
self-signed cert. That's a why SSL sometimes works and then drops off.
MM needs to be configured correctly, like other Poweruser-Mail-Clients 
and MM is the best in this field currently - after PowerMail ;-)
Sadly only available for Mac.
The automatism of Apple's Mail and Thunderbird are working around this, 
by probing, which can  trigger the firewall of the mailserver.

This makes these apps comfortable, overloaded and memory hungry with 
calendar and other gimmiks.
Mailmate is just doing one thing: IMAP-mail and it does this perfectly, 
when configured correctly.
