There you find "makeFirstResponder" that allow you to set focus to any layout part.

You likely want "messageView" in this case.

I use this in several of my custom keybindings, like this:

    "i" = ( "goToMailbox:", "INBOX", "makeFirstResponder:", "mainOutline", "selectFirstMessageRow:" );

This binds "i" to go to the inbox and set focus on the list of e-mails (and select the first row) so I can use my arrow keys to traverse the list of e-mails.
