Well, I got this in an e-mail last year:

> MC1113673 | July 11 - Exchange Online will remove support for Basic authentication with Client Submission (SMTP AUTH) by April 30, 2026. Users must migrate to OAuth or alternative solutions. Basic auth is insecure, and its deprecation aims to improve security. Affected endpoints include smtp.office365.com and smtp-legacy.office365.com.

Handily and typically, the relevant note seems to have disappeared. :-/
