I think this happened because the first incoming message was the one which included the reply in its message list thread. My guess is that you viewed the message in All Messages which means your sent messages were part of the message list. Any action on a collapsed thread applies to all emails in that thread. I can see how this can be a problem, but I don't think it's a bug.

If you don't think the above is what happened then you are welcome to try to reproduce the it and let me know what you find (Help > Send Feedback).

To avoid this in the future, you might want to disable threading in the message list for All Messages (View > Organize by Thread).
