If there's a good reason then I've forgotten it. Originally, MailMate did not support inline images at all and it would require a bit of work to actually keep track of whether an image is inline or not.

I think “bug” is a fair definition even though MailMate never behaved differently. I've noted to look into if it's easily fixed.

(I also think what you describe for ProtonMail sounds like bugs, but that goes for all rewriting of outgoing emails. Outgoing emails should only be altered by adding transmission related headers at the top.)
