That is correct. The best you can do is to use “Edit Subscriptions” in the account editor to unsubscribe any mailboxes you do not need. Using webmail, you could consider putting some of your older emails into separate mailboxes.

You might already have read this, but for Gmail accounts it's also useful/necessary to know how Gmail (Gimap) does not work like regular IMAP and how this affects an email client like MailMate: https://manual.mailmate-app.com/account_setup#gmail
