[MlMt] Authentication methods?

Is there any work planned or in progress for other authentication 
methods than simple passwords? If I try to send mail if I'm not on the 
campus network, I'm told that I'm trying to use an unsupported 
authentication method and I have to fire up a VPN and retry.
