OK - let's try this again.

You MUST have a copy of MailMate -somewhere- because you said you "start it up."

If you don't know where it is, then once it is running, you can go to the dock, and control-click on the MM icon and choose "options" and then "reveal in finder".

Once you can see it in the finder, quit it if it is running.
Now hold down the command key and drag it (MailMate) to your desktop.
Release all keys. You shold see MM on your desktop.
Again, Hold down the command key and drag that MailMate to your /Applications folder.
Let go of the keys.
Double-click on the MM you just dragged to the /Applications folder.
That will run the MM app.
Now go to the MailMate menu, in the upper left corner of your screen, and choose "Check for Update."

Give this a try, even if you don't understand why it might work. It's easy enough to check and see if it solves your problem.

Good Luck.
