The way I did it was to set up a rule to tag or mailing lists as 
"Mailing List" and then set the relevant inboxes not to include anything 
tagged like that. The Opera Mail way is more intuitive but, as Max says, 
this is more flexible.

I suspect there are other ways of doing this that just need documenting.
