[MlMt] default columns

I happily ignored the thread from a month or so ago talking about 
problems setting and using default columns.  Now I find myself in a 
similar state of default column confusion.  Setting default columns does 
not work at all for me, and reverting to default columns give me a 
completely different setup than I want.

Benny, we know you're working on refactoring of the column saving logic. 
  Will it be ready soon?  Please??? :-)
