There's an experimental setting which takes SMTP “offline” when the 
corresponding IMAP account is offline:

	defaults write com.freron.MailMate MmDoNotSendFromOfflineAccounts -bool 
YES

It hasn't been tested much and is only available in the test releases: 
Hold down ⌥ when clicking “Check Now” in the Software Update 
preferences pane.
