Um, yeah: it does. I don't *know* the reason but my best guess is that 
Vlad and/or Dmitri looked at the code and said "that's a giant pile of 
work to change a char to an int."

Let's just say that arguing with Russian coders is the thing I miss 
least about being a CGP admin.
