That would be `^@e`. It's documented 
[here](http://manual.mailmate-app.com/custom_key_bindings).

I don't know what could trigger that. It seems to work for me. You can 
run MailMate from the Terminal to see if an error is reported:

	/Applications/MailMate.app/Contents/MacOS/MailMate
