DH (Dreamhost) uses STARTTLS, and setting the port to 993 forces the client to start connecting in encrypted mode. So to begin a connection one needs to choose port 143 instead. That will instigate a negotiation through to STARTTLS, as the DH wiki notes. The DH main email documentation says that the correct setting is 993. That setting will FAIL .
