Thanks for trying out MailMate.

How do I change the custom folder for Messages? The manual suggests that this is a matter of changing:

Well, when I make the change there to my desired directory, nothing happens.

Any clue why this may be? I feel like I am missing something obvious and have spent way too much time on this lol.

My guess would be that you are trying to move the folder to a different disk. This is not supported. You should, e.g., be able to move it to your home folder:
/Users/<username>/

If that doesn't work then write me via “Help ▸ Send Feedback”.

The feature does not exist to allow you to move it to wherever you have disk space available. It exists to make file searching (and/or Spotlight) work for applications like BusyContacts and HoudahSpot. I think it's a horrible hack, but I haven't (yet) found a better way to achieve this.

I recently wrote a blog post about the BusyContacts integration. Mainly because I often forget the various pitfalls myself: https://blog.freron.com/2025/busycontacts/
