<p dir="auto">Blame Microsoft. ‘/‘ was the only slash on Teletypes, also known as ‘fracbar’ - fraction bar. It became the standard. DOS used ‘\’ for something and M$ called it ‘slash’. Been causing confusion ever since. Taking and existing definition and changing it to fit a M$-only world has been a hobby of M$.</p>

<p dir="auto">Back in the System 370 "code wars" days (think EBCDIC, line printer print trains, etc.) we used "virgule" for slash, "reverse virgule" for backslash, and "octothorpe" for what we also called "pound sign" and which today is "hash".</p>
